[Hey, Johto. Enjoy that loud crash you're hearing, because it's only going to get louder and shatter the afternoon's relative calm. What was it? A crashing Skarmory, if the metallic screeching noise is anything to go by.

Of course, the video feed that suddenly comes on confirms that; Snow the Skarmory is hopping to his feet from where he'd crashed on the pavement, and a ball of running yellow fur can be seen just past him. Fang the Haunter is in direct pursuit of the yellow thing, and Lightning's boots cut across the feed a moment later.]

Fang, cut him off!

[The ghost seems to nod, but what, or who, is the "him"? That question is answered as the yellow thing runs right past the gear again. It's a Pichu, freshly hatched if the egg shell still half covering its head is anything to go by. It doesn't seem to be able to see anything at all, and one of its little paws catches on the cobblestone streets. This allows Lightning and Fang to catch up with it, and Lightning crouches down to remove the shell from its head.

After a moment of blinking in the newly bright light, it peers up at Lightning with wide eyes, then scampers up her arm with some quiet "Pi"s. After a moment of circling like some kind of cat would, the Pichu flops on Lightning's shoulder with an exhausted little sigh. She gives it a wry smile, then reaches over to pick up the gear, shutting it off in the process.]

[ He shakes his head a bit. ] That can't be it, because mine hatched and he's--not small.

[ Leon turns the camera away to show Skarmory, hiding something big and green under her wing. She obediently lifts it, exposing the baby Scyther sleeping against her side. ]

[Huh. That's....a bit of a surprise. If it's not based on size, what could it be? Regardless of what it is, Lightning just makes a slightly amused sound.]

Of course not. Not one thing can make sense here.

[ The camera goes back to his face. ]

Shouldn't surprise you by now, should it?

[A quick shake of her head.]

It stopped surprising me after Snow hatched. [Snow the bird who's just going to stick his head under Lightning's arm; hello, trainer of Mother! Have a chirp in greeting.]

[ There's a raucous Skarmory shout in the background: hi, baby! Leon merely nods. ]

At least Skarmory gets along with this Scyther better than the last one. Guess I should be happy.

[An answering cry from Snow, and the Pichu sits bolt upright before hiding in the collar of Lightning's vest. Loud noisemakers. He's trying to nap!]

It's probably because he's still just a baby. It can be hard to actually dislike them most of the time.

[ A single arched eyebrow. ]

Don't jinx it.

[And a blank stare in return is all he gets.]

Never pinned you as the superstitious type, Leon.

[ His mouth thins. ]

I'm not.

[At that look, Snow retreats from under Lightning's arm. He is being nowhere near this, even if Lightning is dropping the subject.]

If you say so.

[ There's only a bit of a shrug. ]

It got ugly last time.

[And this is just a bit of a headtilt. She can't move so much with the Pichu curled against her neck.]

Doesn't mean it will this time. Jinxed or not, we control our fates.

[ He's not rolling his eyes, but he sort of wants to. 'Controlling our fates'? Really, Lightning? ]

Look--I just don't want another accident on my hands.

[At that, she just shrugs one shoulder. She gets it.]

If you handled it the last time, you could handle it this time. [But she's still dropping the topic.]

Right.

[ And look, he'll drop it too. Great!

The air is not magically becoming less tense. Drat. QUICK, CONVERSATION TOPIC! ]

Hope that Pichu doesn't cause too much trouble.

I doubt he will. He just scared himself and ran for it this time. [And that was because he got his head stuck in his egg. But now that he's sound asleep in the crook of her neck, well, the only trouble is the tension in the air that's making Lightning wary.]

He'll make for a fast fighter, once he's bigger.

A lot bigger. He'll need a lot of training first.

I've heard Pikachu can evolve, but I've never seen it.

It may not be level based. It could be the same as how Sen and Strike evolved. [She still hasn't quite figured that one out.]

[ Happiness--how do you even calculate happiness? ]

Could be. Or a stone. Steelix evolved through trading him while he was holding a specific item.

[ Well...okay, that dissipated some of the tension, at least, because saying it like that? Sounds fucking ridiculous. ]

[It certainly isn't as easy as calculating how many fights until a certain level, that's for sure.]

If that's how Pikachu evolve, it would make sense that you've never seen one. Not many people would know how to do it.

[She's...totally serious. And somehow glad that the tension is dissipating. It feels...odd to be tense around him.]

Rise figured out the Onix thing too--by accident, like me.

[ Tension with Lightning is a new thing, yes. There's not much emotion in the way he's talking--less than usual, I should say--giving the impression that he's being deliberately gruff. ]

We'll just have to wait and see. He's not going to evolve anytime soon.

[Leon doesn't speak emotionally on normal days. This...this is setting off quiet warning bells in her head. Something's wrong, but what? She just can't figure it out.]

[ There's a hum of agreement, before he lapses into silence again. A few seconds pass before he speaks up. ]

I'm going to have to call off sparring for a few weeks.
